SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS OF WEEK 11

SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS OF WEEK 11

Collaros, Hughes, and Sinkfield named Shaw CFL Top Performers after exciting Mark’s Labour Day Weekend showdowns

(TORONTO) Zach Collaros, Charleston Hughes and Terrell Sinkfield Jr were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 11 of the CFL’s 2015 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | Zach Collaros | Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton quarterback Zach Collaros had a career day against the Toronto Argonauts as the Ticats triumphed 42-12 on Monday at Tim Hortons Field.

The 27-year old threw for 400 yards with no interceptions, making 26 of his 38 pass attempts. His dominant performance, one of many this season, yielded four touchdowns for the home team.

The native of Steubenville, OH, opened the scoring less than 10 minutes into the game with a series of completions to three separate receivers. The play culminated in a Terrence Toliver touchdown to put the Ticats ahead in a lead they never lost.

The former Cincinnati Bearcat then made a 48-yard pass to Terrell Sinkfield to move Hamilton off their own five-yard line and into good position for another drive that yielded a field goal. Collaros’ accurate passing netted him 138 passing yards in the first quarter.

Collaros collected his second touchdown within the first 10 minutes of the second quarter with a six-yard pass to Tiquan Underwood to cap off a string of precise passes and runs. He got another one before the end of the quarter on an 18-yard pass to Sinkfield that had the Ticats ahead 27-1 by halftime.

Collaros threw his final major in the game in fourth quarter after finding Sinkfield again for a 16-yard touchdown.

Collaros sits atop the CFL leaderboard with 3032 passing yards in the 2015 season. This is Collaros’ fourth Shaw Top Performer nod, with previous appearances coming in Weeks 8 and 9 in addition to an award for the month of August.

DE | Charleston Hughes | Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Stampeders linebacker Charleston Hughes helped the defending Grey Cup champs to a defence-powered 16-7 win over the Edmonton Eskimos on Monday.

The Saginaw, MI native was a force for Calgary and locked down the fort to prevent Edmonton from gaining any foothold; Hughes had five defensive tackles in the contest, including three quarterback sacks.

In the first 10 minutes, Hughes was able to get to Edmonton's quarterback, James Franklin which produced a nine-yard loss on the play. He notched another defensive tackle in the first quarter to boost Calgary’s momentum.

The product of Northwood University remained a defensive stalwart throughout the game, securing a sack on Franklin with 5:08 remaining in the second quarter, and one on Reilly for a three-yard loss in the fourth quarter.

Hughes has already tied his 2014 sack record and is currently first in the league with nine sacks in the 2015 season. Hughes still holds records at Northwood for total career tackles (372), total tackles in one game (19), solo career tackles (259) and solo tackles in a season (81).

WR | Terrell Sinkfield Jr | Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats receiver Terrell Sinkfield Jr. recorded 110 receiving yards and two touchdowns in a dominant 42-12 Labour Day win over the visiting Toronto Argonauts.

Sinkfield played an instrumental part in the victory, opening the game for the Ticats with a 20-yard pass from quarterback Zach Collaros. His speed and positioning helped get Hamilton off their own five-yard line later in the first quarter when he caught a 48-yard pass.

The Northern Iowa football alum got his first touchdown of the game from the end zone late in the second quarter with an 18-yard major that put Hamilton ahead 27-1 heading into halftime.

The Minnetonka, MN native caught an eight-yard pass in the third quarter, and capped off a successful game with 2:25 remaining when he caught a 16-yard pass. Sinkfield eluded the advances of two Toronto defenders and ran the ball in for a touchdown to solidify Hamilton’s strong lead.

This is Sinkfield’s second Shaw Top Performer accolade; he was also recognized in Week 9.
