SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – AUGUST
Willie Jefferson, Trevor Harris and Dylan Wynn named August’s Shaw CFL Top Performers
TORONTO (August 28, 2019) – Willie Jefferson, Trevor Harris and Dylan Wynn were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month for August of the CFL’s 2019 season. The Performers of the Month for August includes all appearances from Week 8 to Week 11.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
DL | WILLIE JEFFERSON | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS
Willie Jefferson’s nod as a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Month makes it two-in-a-row for Winnipeg after Winston Rose took home the honour in July.
The Beaumont, Texas, native’s Week 11 showing saw him collect four tackles, a career-high trio of sacks, a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a knockdown en route to being named a Performer of the Week.
Jefferson’s productive August included his third-career interception, three forced fumbles to propel him into the league-lead at five (a new career-high), as well as, six sacks to reach a tie for second behind Charleston Hughes (10). At eight sacks on the season through 10 games, he is on pace to surpass his personal best of 10, set in 2018.
QB | TREVOR HARRIS | EDMONTON ESKIMOS
Trevor Harris’ impressive play has garnered him a second monthly honour (June) in addition to being recognized as a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 1 and 10.
The Esks’ pivot continued his strong play this past month, converting 116-of-163 attempts (71.2%) while accumulating 1,550 yards and six passing touchdowns. He added 17 carries, 58 yards on the ground and his fifth and sixth rushing TDs on the year. Prior to the 2019 campaign, Harris had rushed for three career majors.
Across the four-week stretch, the native of Waldo, Ohio, padded his league-leading 3,481 passing yards and now sits 1,044 yards clear of Mike Reilly (2,437) and is knotted for second in passing TDs (14) alongside McLeod Bethel-Thompson. The primary beneficiaries of his aerial assault have been Ricky Collins (first in receiving yards at 760 and fourth in catches with 50) and Greg Ellingson (fourth at 710 yards and third with 53 receptions).
Harris’ month was highlighted by his first-career game with multiple rushing majors (two in Week 10), as well as, back-to-back 400+ passing yard efforts (Weeks 10-11). He tops the CFL with six games of 300+ passing yards and despite leading the league in pass attempts (401), Harris has only been intercepted on three occasions – lowest among QBs who have more than 75 throws.
DT | DYLAN WYNN | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS
Dylan Wynn is coming off one of the most productive months of his three-year CFL career.
In Week 11, the 26-year-old tallied four defensive tackles and set a new career-high with three sacks as the Ticats registered a 13-10 victory on the road in BC. The Oregon State product’s effort earned him a place among the week’s Top Performers.
Wynn tallied at least one sack each week in August, and his six this past month alone, equalled his previous best for a season established in 2017. His eight sacks on the year have already doubled his career total, and he is tied with Willie Jefferson and teammate Ja’Gared Davis for second in 2019.
At 26 defensive tackles on the year, Wynn is eight shy of his personal best set in 2017.
