SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS OF WEEK 5

Burris, Whiteside and Williams named Shaw CFL Top Performers

Henry Burris, Aston Whiteside and Chris Williams were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 5 of the CFL's 2015 season.

This marks the first-time ever one team has swept the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week award.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

Tomorrow, the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Month for July (Weeks 1-5) will be announced.

QB | Henry Burris | Ottawa REDBLACKS

REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris set a franchise passing record by throwing for 389 yards in Ottawa's third victory of the season.

Burris completed 28 of 43 passes (65.1 percent) and threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers.

Nearing the end of the opening quarter, Burris found Ernest Jackson for a 24-yard major. Later in the game, Burris found Greg Ellingson for a six-yard strike; his final touchdown pass was caught by Chris Williams for an 84-yard touchdown.

The Spiro, Oklahoma native also rushed for 11 yards in the game.

The product of Temple University currently sits second in the league with 1,372 passing yards and is tied for second with seven passing touchdowns.

DL | Aston Whiteside | Ottawa REDBLACKS

In his season debut, defensive lineman Aston Whiteside helped the Ottawa REDBLACKS record their third victory of the season by defeating the reining Grey Cup Champions, the Calgary Stampeders, 29-26 in the nation's capital.

The Vernon, Texas native recorded two tackles, notched a pair of sacks, forced two fumbles and added a fumble recovery in the contest.

In the second quarter, Whiteside was able to wrap up Stampeders' pivot Bo Levi Mitchell for his first sack and in the process forced a fumble as well as recovered the football. The turnover turned into three points after Delbert Alvarado kicked a 25-yard field goal.

Whiteside, number two on the all-time sacks list at Abilene Christian University, also made a pivotal play in overtime. On the first play in overtime, Whiteside notched his second sack and forced a fumble where Keith Shologan recovered the football, resulting in Alvarado hitting the game-winning kick for the REDBLACKS.

WR | Chris Williams | Ottawa REDBLACKS

In his fifth game with the Ottawa REDBLACKS, Williams had a breakout game in Ottawa's home victory against Calgary on Friday night.

Williams recorded seven receptions for 162 yards including an 84-yard touchdown catch midway through the fourth quarter for his first touchdown of the season.

The career receiving yards and touchdown reception leader at New Mexico State has begun to show his all-star form in the 2015 season. In the past two games he has caught 14 passes and 252 yards.

The native of Rio Rancho, New Mexico has caught 27 passes for 432 receiving yards and leads the league in receiving yards.

Williams also returned five punts for 23 yards during the REDBLACKS' July 24th overtime victory.

This marks the first-time ever one team has swept the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week award.
