SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 1

Ray, Green and Mincy named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (June 27th, 2017) – Ricky Ray, SJ Green and Jonathon Mincy were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 1 of the CFL’s 2017 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | RICKY RAY | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

In the Toronto Argonauts’ 2017 home opener, quarterback Ricky Ray had the strongest statistical game of his 15-year career in Sunday’s 32-15 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Ray completed 32 passes for 506 yards in the contest – the second 500-yard game of his career and his 12th 400+-yard game. In the game, Ray eclipsed 55,000 passing yards mark, becoming the fourth quarterback in CFL history to do so.

Ray’s touchdown pass came 32 seconds into the second half when he connected with DeVier Posey for a 79-yard major to give the Argonauts a 21-12 lead. In his first game under Marc Trestman, Ray displayed his big-play ability by completing five passes for 30+ yards. Ray showed off his accuracy in the first game of 2017 by completing 78% of his pass attempts versus the Tiger-Cats.

The native of Happy Camp, California is only three touchdowns away from becoming the sixth pivot in CFL history to throw for 300 career touchdowns.

SB | S.J. GREEN | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

New Argonauts receiver S.J. Green made a statement with his new team in Sunday’s 32-15 victory over rivals the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at BMO Field in Toronto.

Green had immediate chemistry with quarterback Ricky Ray, and collected 125 receiving yards on seven receptions. His first came in the first quarter, a 27-yard pass followed by an electrifying one-handed 13-yard catch in an eight-play drive that brought the Boatmen close enough for Lirim Hajrullahu to make a successful field goal. Green caught a 32-yard toss to end the quarter and a 23-yard pass in the second.

Green tied with Posey for a team-high eight targets on Sunday.

The Brandon, Florida native and South Florida alum was one of three double-blue receivers to pass the 100-yard mark on Sunday. Green is in his 11th season in the CFL,  has registered four 1,000 receiving yards seasons (2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015).

DB | JONATHON MINCY | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Jonathon Mincy registered five defensive tackles, one interception and two knockdowns in the 2017 season opener Thursday in Montreal. Mincy was a crucial part of Montreal’s defence in their 17-16 defeat of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

In his second season in the CFL, the former Auburn Tiger knocked down two successive Kevin Glenn passes in the second quarter, stalling the Roughriders’ progress. His game-changing play came in the fourth quarter with a leaping interception to swat down a Kevin Glenn pass and put the ball in the hands of the Alouettes’ defence. Mincy’s second career pick came at the right time for the Alouettes as they secured a home win in their first game of 2017.

The Decateur, Georgia native collected 56 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles as a rookie in 2016.

Mincy was Montreal’s nominee for most outstanding rookie in 2016.
