SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 12

SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 12

Leggett, Zylstra and Masoli named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (September 12th, 2017) – Maurice Leggett, Brandon Zylstra and Jeremiah Masoli were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 12 of the CFL’s 2017 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

DB | MAURICE LEGGETT | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Maurice Leggett collected two touchdowns to help the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to their 48-28 Banjo Bowl victory at Investors Group Field in a raucous showdown with prairie rivals the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Leggett returned a Josh Bartel punt just before it bounced out of bounds, returning it 97 yards for a touchdown to open the second quarter and give Winnipeg the lead, 14-7 following the successful convert.

Midway through the third quarter Leggett struck again, intercepting a Kevin Glenn pass attempt and running it back 54 yards for a touchdown to solidify Winnipeg’s lead. He also notched three defensive tackles in the contest.

Leggett now has six career touchdowns; four interception returns, a field goal miss return and now a punt return.

The Valdosta State alum has 38 defensive tackles, three forced fumbles, three sacks, two interceptions and has two touchdowns in his fourth season in the CFL. His three forced fumbles have him in a three-way tie for first in the league.

Leggett was a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Week 7 as well as a Top Performer of the Month for August.

WR | BRANDON ZYLSTRA | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Brandon Zylstra racked up 187 receiving yards on 10 receptions in a season best performance in Edmonton’s 22-25 loss to provincial rivals the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday in Edmonton.

The Spicer, Minnesota native helped quarterback Mike Reilly get the team into position for a Chris Milo field goal in the second quarter with an 18-yard catch.

Zylstra also put Edmonton into field goal possession in the final seconds of the game with a 28-yard catch, but Milo’s attempt flew wide.

It also marked the third time he has recorded 100+ receiving yards in a game this season and his fifth in 15 career games.

In just his second year in the CFL, Zylstra is third in the league with 916 receiving yards. He has two touchdowns on 63 receptions.

QB| JEREMIAH MASOLI | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Jeremiah Masoli took control of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to steer them to their second win in a row in a 26-22 victory over East Division rivals the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday evening in Ottawa.

Masoli passed for 231 yards in the contest, going 17-for-31 and contributing 73 rushing yards of his own. Masoli got the game off to a strong start, leaping out to a 6-0 lead after his 10-yard dash started a four-play drive that culminated with a CJ Gable rushing touchdown less than 10 minutes into the game.

The San Francisco, California native called his own number at the top of the second quarter, dashing for 29 yards and steering the Ticats into scoring position for another Gable rushing touchdown to give Hamilton a 17-1 lead after the convert. Masoli kept a steady hand to put Sergio Castillo into position for several more successful field goals and give Hamilton the win.

The former Ole Miss Rebel has 595 yards and a touchdown on 50 receptions in four games (two starts) in 2017, his fifth year in the CFL. Since being named the new starter for Hamilton, the team is 2-0.
