Shaw CFL Top Performers - Week 16

Harris, Mathews and Arceneaux named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO – Trevor Harris, Jeff Mathews, and Emmanuel Arceneaux were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 16 of the CFL’s 2015 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | Trevor Harris | Toronto Argonauts

Toronto Argonauts quarterback Trevor Harris was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer after his impressive performance against the Ottawa REDBLACKS in Ottawa.

Harris completed 72.7% of his passes on his way to throwing for a career-high 397 yards. He also reached a new career high with five touchdowns in the Argonauts 38-35 victory.

Harris, a Waldo, Ohio native threw five majors to five different receivers in the game. During the first half of play he threw three majors; Kevin Elliot from six yards out, Tori Gurley from 15 yards and Vidal Hazelton from 16 yards out.

In the second half, he found Brandon Whitaker for a 4-yard touchdown. With the Argonauts down by four points, he found Chad Owens with 29 seconds left in the game on a highlight-reel one-handed grab that gave the Argonauts the late lead that led to their road victory.

Harris also rushed for 25 yards on three attempts. This season, Harris has eclipsed the 300 yard passing mark on five occasions.

A former Edinboro University Fighting Scot in his fourth CFL season, Harris leads the CFL in touchdowns (31) and completion percentage (72.1%), and is third in passing yards (3,782).

QB | Jeff Mathews | Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats first-year quarterback Jeff Mathews had his best performance as a professional Friday night, propelling the Ticats 30-15 over the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Mathews threw 22 of 33 for 385 yards and three touchdowns. He began by maneuvering Hamilton within field goal range after being stuck on their own 5-yard line. Halfway through the second quarter, Mathews secured his first career touchdown pass with a 9-yard throw to Luke Tasker to give Hamilton a 9-0 lead.

Good chemistry with Tasker and Tiquan Underwood paid off, as Mathews notched his second TD of the game at the close of the second quarter with a series of long throws capped off with a 6-yard toss to Underwood.

The Camarillo, California native completed his touchdown trio with an 87-yard throw to Terrell Sinkfield to cement Hamilton’s win.

The product of Cornell ranked in the top 20 for quarterback passing yardage in Division 1 FCS history, and beat a Cornell record for total passing yards by more than 2000 yards. His time at Cornell closed with 47 Cornell and 18 Ivy League conference records in his name.

WR | Emmanuel Arceneaux | BC Lions

Emmanuel Arceneaux scored a pair of touchdowns in a B.C. Lions 29-26 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday in Vancouver.

Arceneaux hauled in a season-high eight receptions for another season-high 151 yards while scoring a pair of touchdowns from Jonathon Jennings.

Midway through the second quarter, Arceneaux scored his first major of the contest from six yards out. On the very next series for the Lions, Jennings found Arceneaux for the 38-yard strike.

Six of his receptions in the game were 13 or more yards, and three were for over 25 yards.

A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, Arceneaux is having a very productive year. He currently sits second in the league in receiving yards (973), has seven touchdowns to his name and has recorded 389 yards after the catch.

Arceneaux played football collegiately at Alcorn State and also competed on their track team.
