SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS - WEEK 18

SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS - WEEK 18

Arceneaux, Chick and Messam named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (October 25, 2016) – Emmanuel Arceneaux, John Chick and Jerome Messam were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 18 of the CFL’s 2016 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

REC | Emmanuel Arceneaux | BC Lions

BC Lions leading receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux notched his fifth 100+ yard receiving game of the season to help keep the Lions’ hopes for clinching second place in the West Division alive after defeating Edmonton 32-25 at BC Place on Saturday.

The Alexandria, Louisiana native tallied eight receptions for 132 yards (16.5 yards per reception) and scored a pair of touchdowns.

The Alcorn State product scored both his ninth and tenth touchdowns in the second quarter. His first came six minutes into the quarter when Jonathan Jennings found Arceneaux in one-on-one coverage from six yards out.

His second major of the day came with just over two minutes left in the half. Arceneaux made a leaping catch and then found some daylight and took it to the house for a 70-yard touchdown to give the Lions a 17-5 advantage.

Arceneaux recorded his third 1,000+ receiving yard season in the CFL this year. He currently sits third in the league with 1,318 yards, tied for first with ten receiving touchdowns and fourth in the league with 91 receptions.

This is Arceneaux’s second Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Week this season, his first coming in Week 14.

DE | John Chick | Hamilton Tiger-Cats

John Chick played a key role in Hamilton’s close 39-36 overtime win over divisional rivals the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night.

Chick had five defensive tackles, two quarterback sacks, and one forced fumble in the contest that secured a postseason berth for the Ticats.

In the back half of the first quarter, Chick sacked REDBLACKS quarterback Henry Burris for a one-yard loss.

The Gillette, Wyoming native helped to orchestrate the game-winning move as he stripped the ball away from Burris on Ottawa’s second down of overtime to allow teammate Brett Maher to make the game-winning field goal.

The Utah State alum has 35 defensive tackles, 13 sacks (putting him third in the CFL), and four forced fumbles in 16 games in 2016.

RB | Jerome Messam | Calgary Stampeders

Jerome Messam set a career best in Calgary’s 31-13 romp over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday.

In a game that gave Calgary a perfect record at home for the 2016 season, Messam rushed for 111 yards on just ten carries.

He passed his previous personal best of 1,057 yards set in 2011 with Edmonton, only minutes into the game as he rushed for 31 yards on the Stampeders’ first snap from scrimmage to set the tone of the game.

Messam leads the league in rushing yards (1,162) and rushing touchdowns (11). He is still the only CFL running back to rush for over 1000 yards in 2016. This is Messam’s third time on the Shaw CFL Top Performers board in 2016; previous accolades came in Weeks 2 and 7.
