SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 18

SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 18

Banks, Wilder and Carter named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (October 24th, 2017) – Brandon Banks, James Wilder Jr. and Duron Carter were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 18 of the CFL’s 2017 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

WR | BRANDON BANKS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Receiver and returner Brandon Banks led his team in receiving yards, collecting 240 total yards and scoring two touchdowns as part of a Hamilton squad that scored 40 straight points in Saturday’s 43-16 win over the Montreal Alouettes.

Banks collected 129 receiving yards on six catches in his fourth consecutive game with over 100 receiving yards.

The Garner, North Carolina native made two huge scoring plays of over 60 yards, beginning with a punt return touchdown that saw him cut across the field for 65 yards for the score in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Banks caught a 65-yard catch from Jeremiah Masoli and ran the rest of the way to the end zone for another touchdown to further solidify the Ticats’ lead.

Banks has 742 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 47 receptions in 2017. He also has 384 punt return yards and 604 kickoff return yards, as well as a punt return touchdown and a rushing touchdown.

RB | JAMES WILDER JR. | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

Running back James Wilder Jr. rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s last-minute 29-28 victory by the Toronto Argonauts over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to take over the top spot in the east.

The game was his third with over 100 yards rushing this year. After missing Week 17’s game with an injury, Wilder caught seven catches for 85 receiving yards.

On the first scoring drive of the game, Wilder ran 12 yards after a handoff from Ricky Ray, hopping over the line while being tackled to score his first touchdown of the contest, his third rushing touchdown of 2017. Wilder finished the first quarter with a 14-yard run at the end of the first quarter that put teammate Declan Cross in position to catch a six-yard pass from Ray and run the ball in for the major to give the Argonauts the lead.

Wilder caught a 30-yard pass from Ricky Ray in the third quarter, ploughing through to run it in on the following play for his second touchdown of the game.

Wilder has 736 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 104 rushes. He also has 442 receiving yards in 2017. He was previously named a Shaw Top Performer in Weeks 13 and 14 as well as for the month of September.

WR | DURON CARTER | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

In his first career start on defence, Duron Carter helped the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 30-7 victory to end the Calgary Stampeders’ 17-game home winning streak.

Carter scored a pick-six and made two defensive tackles as part of a Saskatchewan defence that did not allow a single touchdown in Friday’s game at McMahon Stadium.

The big play came in the fourth quarter when Carter picked off a Bo Levi Mitchell pass and returned it 43 yards, looping around defenders to evade tackles before diving over the line to score a touchdown and lengthen the Roughriders’ lead.

Carter has now scored four different types of touchdown in his career, one of just 43 players to do so in CFL history.

Carter was previously a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 6 and 17. In 2017 he has 1,037 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 72 receptions – just three from tying his career best (75).

SHAW FANS’ CHOICE OF THE WEEK!

Duron Carter won Week 17 of Shaw Fans’ Choice of the Week and collected 10 bonus points.
