SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 20

SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 20

Brandon Banks, Cody Fajardo and Dane Evans named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (October 29, 2019) – Brandon Banks, Cody Fajardo and Dane Evans were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 20 of the CFL’s 2019 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges comprised of former CFL players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde, as well as, Pierre Vercheval of RDS, who independently send their selections to the CFL head office.

WR | BRANDON BANKS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Hamilton star receiver Brandon Banks tallied a personal-best 201 receiving yards on 11 receptions and three touchdowns to lead the team to a 38-26 road victory.

Late in the opening quarter, Dane Evans connected with Banks over the middle, who then proceeded to weave his way in for the 55-yard major. The reception – Banks’ fourth of the day – also broke Luke Tasker’s team record for catches in a single season (104).

Evans found Banks at the back of the endzone for a nine-yard score to give the visitors a 27-21 advantage midway through the third in the seesaw affair. After Montreal drew within two points early in the final frame, Evans’ shovel pass to Banks resulted in a six-yard score to cap the Garner, N.C., native’s big day.

Banks leads the league in receptions (112), receiving yards (1,550) and receiving touchdowns (13). He was previously named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in Weeks 5 and 9, in addition to a monthly nod in June.

QB | CODY FAJARDO | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Cody Fajardo completed 25-of-35 passes for 429 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-24 victory over Edmonton. The win moved the Roughriders into first in the West Division with one week remaining.

The Nevada product recorded his 17th passing touchdown of the campaign midway through the third quarter, finding Kyran Moore for a 25-yard major, which trimmed the Esks’ lead to 17-13.

On the next possession, Fajardo marched the Roughriders down the field on a six-play, 74-yard drive before connecting with Emmanuel Arceneaux on a five-yard touchdown pass. With the game knotted at 24 and overtime looming, Fajardo completed 5-of-7 passes en route to a nine-play, 69-yard drive to set up Brett Lauther’s game-winning field goal.

Fajardo owns a 71.5 completion rate and tops the CFL in passing yards (4,302), while notching 28 touchdowns (18 passing, 10 rushing). This is the Brea, Calif., native’s fourth weekly recognition following selections in Weeks 3, 8 and 16.

QB | DANE EVANS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Hamilton quarterback Dane Evans continues to power the 2019 edition of the Tiger-Cats to new heights, adding another victory on top of the team’s franchise mark of 13 set in Week 19.

Evans was 29-for-36 (80.6%), throwing for 379 yards and a career-high four touchdowns in Hamilton’s 38-26 victory over Montreal. Brandon Banks was Evans’ preferred target on the day, accounting for 201 passing yards and a trio of majors. The Sanger, Texas, native’s remaining TD pass – a 6-yard strike to Anthony Coombs in the third quarter – and the ensuing convert tied the game at 21-a-piece.

The Tulsa product has passed for 300+ yards on seven occasions this season, including six times in Hamilton’s past seven games. Evans has accumulated 3,754 passing yards and 24 touchdowns (21 pass, 3 rush), while completing 72.2% of his attempts.

Evans has now been selected among the week’s best on four occasions (Weeks 12, 16, 19 and 20), in addition to being named a Shaw CFL Top Performer of the Month in September.
