SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 3

Gable, Masoli, Bede named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (July 3rd, 2018) – CJ Gable, Jeremiah Masoli and Boris Bede were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 3 of the CFL’s 2018 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

RB | CJ GABLE | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Running back CJ Gable was an integral part of Edmonton’s come-from-behind 41-22 win over the BC Lions on Friday.

Gable collected 165 rushing yards - a 2018 CFL high - on 23 carries in the contest, along with a touchdown.

Midway through the second quarter, Gable strung together five running plays as part of quarterback Mike Reilly’s 11-play, 85-yard scoring drive that culminated in a Natey Adjei touchdown.

His longest run of the game occurred in the second quarter, a physical 34-yard dash that formed an integral part of a scoring drive that gave Edmonton their first lead of the game.

Gable’s major came in the third frame, a three-yard sprint over the line after the Sylmar, California native had completed five rushes on the drive.

Gable recorded seven rushes for 10+ yards, and two for 20+.

The former USC Trojan has 241 rushing yards in three games in 2018 while averaging 5.9 yards per rush.

QB | JEREMIAH MASOLI | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Jeremiah Masoli steered the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the top of the East Division with a 31-17 victory against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, collecting 369 passing yards and a touchdown.

Masoli went 31-for-41, putting three of his receivers at 80 yards in the contest. After Winnipeg got off to an early start, Masoli responded with a 10-play drive to give Mercer Timmis the opportunity to run the ball in for a touchdown. He continued moving Hamilton down the field, putting kicker Hajrullahu in position for three field goals in the second quarter.

The 5'10" pivot opened the third quarter with a 74-yard scoring drive, going six-for-six on passes to set Timmis up for another major to put the Ticats ahead 22-10. On the next series, Hamilton receiver Terrance Toliver snagged a 25-yard Masoli pass for a touchdown.

Masoli is the CFL’s current passing leader with 1,045 yards on the season, a 70.8% completion, and a pass efficiency rating of 102.9. The Ticats are now 8-5 since Masoli was appointed as the starter, and he has passed for 300+ yards in eight consecutive games. He was named a Shaw Top Performer in Week 2.

K | BORIS BEDE | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Kicker Boris Bede went five-for-five on field goal attempts on Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, earning the Montreal Alouettes their first win of this season.

Bede also recorded 458 punting yards and 268 kickoff yards, logging averages of 45.8 yards per punt and 67 yards per kickoff.

Bede’s convert on Chris Williams’ second-quarter touchdown put Montreal ahead 10-3, a lead they maintained for the entire game as quarterbacks Drew Willy and Jeff Mathews continued to place Bede into position to kick five successful field goals.

The Laval product nailed field goal attempts from 17, 21, 32, 38, and 45 yards out. He leads the league in punting and kickoff yards with 1,115 combined.

Bede has currently made 100% of his seven attempted field goals in 2018, earning 24 points for Montreal.

Bede, who set a CFL kickoff record last season by averaging 69.0 yards per kickoff, is currently toping that mark this year by averaging 70.8 yards per kickoff.
