SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 5

Messam, Reilly and Hughes named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (July 26th, 2017) – Jerome Messam, Mike Reilly and Charleston Hughes were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 5 of the CFL’s 2017 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

RB | JEROME MESSAM | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Jerome Messam was a powerful force at McMahon Stadium on Saturday night, collecting 135 rushing yards and a touchdown to give the Stampeders a 27-10 win.

His 28 carries saw him hit the 100-yard mark for the first time in 2017; he has done so three times in four games against the Roughriders since 2015. In the dying minutes of the fourth quarter, Messam dove over the line for a touchdown of his own to seal the victory.

Messam currently leads the league with 323 rushing yards and is just 209 shy of 5,000 career yards.

He was named the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian in 2016 and 2011, and collected 1,000 rushing yards in 2011, 2015, and 2016.

QB | MIKE REILLY | TORONTO ARGONAUTS

Mike Reilly led a momentous touchdown to give Edmonton the 31-28 win at in a close-fought game at Tim Hortons Field on Thursday night.

Reilly threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns. Edmonton got off to a slow start, but picked up at the end of the first quarter with a Bryant Mitchell touchdown off a 29-yard Reilly pass. A 61-yard drive in the closing minutes of the first half saw Reilly scramble to keep the play alive before finding Brandon Zylstra two yards from the end zone; Travon Van ran the ball in for a touchdown on the following play.

The former Central Washington Wildcat utilized Cory Watson in the fourth quarter, tossing him a 34-yard pass that the slotback returned another 29 yards for the score. Reilly mounted a comeback drive in the final minutes, putting together an eight-play drive to place kicker Sean Whyte in position for a field goal. A 15-yard pass to Vidal Hazelton for a touchdown followed by a three-yard pass to Bryant Mitchell for a two-point conversion was enough for a last-minute win.

Edmonton remains the only unbeaten team in the CFL. Through four games played, Reilly has 1,216 receiving yards, 33 rushing yards, seven touchdowns and zero interceptions.

DL | CHARLESTON HUGHES | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Charleston Hughes made a huge impact in his return to football after sitting out several games on an injury, helping lead the Stampeders to a 27-10 home victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

With a hat trick of quarterback sacks in the first half, Hughes helped the Stampeders open the game strong. His first sack came in the first quarter, as he pursued quarterback Kevin Glenn to the ground. He collected two more by the end of the half for a collective 12-yard loss. Hughes added three defensive tackles in the game.

In three games played in 2017, Hughes has 11 defensive tackles and four sacks. He now has 92 career sacks, and led the league last year with 16 sacks.
