SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 5

Williams, Lulay, Johnson named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (July 17th, 2018) – D’Haquille “Duke” Williams, Travis Lulay and Micah Johnson were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 5 of the CFL’s 2018 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

WR | D’HAQUILLE “DUKE” WILLIAMS | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Receiver D’haquille “Duke” Williams was a big part of Edmonton’s close win over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, avenging his team’s loss to the Argos in Week 4.

Williams collected 123 receiving yards on nine catches in addition to a crucial touchdown.

The former Auburn Tiger opened the game with a huge 43-yard reception, establishing himself as a primary target throughout the contest. He and Mike Reilly struck gold in the third quarter on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that featured three passes to Williams, including one for a perfectly-placed 11-yard touchdown.

Williams is first overall among receivers with 556 yards through the air so far, collecting 100+ yards in four of his five games played in 2018. He also leads the league in receptions with 31. He was a Player of the Month for July.

QB | TRAVIS LULAY | BC LIONS

Quarterback Travis Lulay orchestrated an incredible comeback win to give the BC Lions their second win of the season in his first start since August 2017.

After missing the latter half of the 2017 season with a knee injury, Lulay returned to the starting quarterback role with a 20-17 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Saturday.

Lulay went 28-for-41, throwing for 326 yards and one touchdown.

In the third quarter, Lulay brought BC 98 yards in seven plays, putting the Leos into position for teammate Cody Fajardo to call his own number and put BC on the board with a QB sneak touchdown.

BC’s comeback from a 17-0 deficit truly began in the fourth quarter on a brilliant nine-play drive. Working closely with Chris Rainey, Lulay moved the Lions downfield before throwing a 13-yard pass to Shaq Johnson, who ran it in for a touchdown. With just 1:11 remaining on BC’s next play and the team one point behind Winnipeg, Lulay put Ty Long into position for a 16-yard field goal to push the Lions ahead and secure the win.

DL | MICAH JOHNSON | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Defensive lineman Micah Johnson was an integral part of Calgary’s win over the Ottawa REDBLACKS to keep them at a perfect record.

Johnson was a defensive powerhouse on Thursday, collecting a hat trick of sacks and forcing two fumbles. He was a big part of a defence that limited Ottawa to just 27 yards in the first quarter, and just three points on the contest.

The Columbus, Georgia native laid a big sack on Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris for a loss of four yards in the second quarter, forcing a fumble.

Johnson sacked Dominique Davis in the fourth quarter for a loss of one yard, forcing a fumble that gave the Stampeders possession.

The former Kentucky Wildcat sacked Davis for the second time later in the quarter, this time for an Ottawa loss of seven yards.

Johnson has four sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception in 2018.
