SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 6

Carter, Michel and Jeffcoat named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (August 1st, 2017) – Duron Carter, Marken Michel and Jackson Jeffcoat were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 6 of the CFL’s 2017 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

WR | DURON CARTER | SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Duron Carter’s coming-out party in Saskatchewan led to a 38-27 Roughrider win over the visiting Toronto Argonauts Saturday night at Mosaic.

Carter’s 131 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions were the difference for the Roughriders, who overcame an early deficit to earn the home win.

Late in the second quarter, Carter capped off an eight-play drive with a spectacular one-handed catch on an 18-yard Kevin Glenn pass to tie the game at 17-all after the convert.

Carter continued his highlight-reel game with nine catches, including several in heavy coverage. The Ohio State alum struck again in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard catch in the endzone for a touchdown to push Saskatchewan ahead.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native has 287 yards, 25 receptions, and three touchdowns in 2017.

Carter is the first Saskatchewan player to be named a Shaw CFL Top Performer in 2017.

WR | MARKEN MICHEL | CALGARY STAMPEDERS

First-year Stampeder Marken Michel had a breakout performance in his third CFL game, recording a touchdown to help the Stamps to a resounding 60-1 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at McMahon Stadium Saturday night.

The Orlando, Florida native also collected 190 receiving yards and seven rushing yards, stepping in for injured receiver Kamar Jorden to help power the Stampeders’ offence. Michel reeled in a huge 40-yard pass in the second quarter at the one-yard line to set up a Jerome Messam rushing touchdown on the next play.

Michel continued to make big plays, reaching 100 receiving yards on just his second catch of the game with a 60-yard catch-and-run to set up another Messam score. Michel continued his standout game with a big 35-yard touchdown catch in heavy coverage in the dying seconds of the second quarter.

Michel has two touchdowns on eight receptions and 227 yards in 2017. The former University of Massachusetts Minutemen is averaging a whopping 28.4 yards per catch this season.

DL | JACKSON JEFFCOAT | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Winnipeg defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat helped the Blue Bombers turn the tide in their thrilling 41-40 comeback win over the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday night.

The former Texas Longhorn made a big interception in the first quarter, spinning in the path of a Darian Durant pass and returning it 17 yards to pave the way for an Andrew Harris touchdown.

The first-year CFLer collected two quarterback sacks filling in for the injured Tristan Okpalaugo, one in the first quarter and one in the third to hand Montreal a 10-yard loss.

Jeffcoat has seven defensive tackles and an interception in three games played in 2017.

In 2013 at Texas, Jeffcoat won the Ted Hendricks Award as college football’s top defensive end.
