SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS - WEEK 7

Messam, Purifoy and Paredes named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (August 9, 2016) – Jerome Messam, Loucheiz Purifoy and Rene Paredes were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 6 of the CFL’s 2016 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

RB | Jerome Messam | Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Stampeders running back Jerome Messam was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer after racking up 145 yards from scrimmage to keep the Stampeders in the West Division’s front position.

In the Stampeders’ 35-15 victory over Saskatchewan, Messam ran for his second 100+ yard game of the season after rushing on 17 occasions for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Messam scored his third major of the year late in the fourth quarter from a yard out to put the game out of reach of the visiting Roughriders.

The Brampton, Ontario native took control of the game in the fourth quarter. With the Stampeders leading 19-15 entering the fourth, Messam rushed the ball a total of nine times for 72 yards (eight yards per carry) to seal the victory.

Messam, a product of Graceland, added five receptions on seven targets for 36 yards.

To this point in the season Messam leads the CFL in rushing with 404 yards.

This marks back-to-back weeks that a Calgary Stampeder has been named a Shaw CFL Top performer (Bo Levi Mitchell in Week 6).

DB | Loucheiz Purifoy | BC Lions

First-year CFLer Loucheiz Purifoy provided a defensive spark that helped the Lions get back in the win column and keep pace with the Calgary Stampeders following the team’s 38-18 road victory versus the Montreal Alouettes.

In his sixth game in the league, he matched his career-high in tackles with five including two for a loss. He also scored his first touchdown after recovering a Corbin Louks fumble and returning it 47 yards early in the fourth quarter to give the Lions a 29-18 lead.

Purifoy, who played collegiately with the Florida Gators, has recorded 22 tackles including three on special teams, an interception and a quarterback sack this season with the Lions.

K | Rene Paredes | Calgary Stampeders

Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer following a perfect performance in the Stampeders’ 35-15 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Paredes accounted for 17 points in the game. He went five for five on field goals, successfully kicking them from 17, 24, 25, 31 and 35 yards out.

The product from Concordia has now successfully converted 16 consecutive field goals.

Paredes is currently tied for the league lead with 20 field goals, and has hit 80% of his attempts this season. His longest field goal this season is from 49-yards.

This is the second straight week where a kicker was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer (Lirim Hajrullahu in Week 6).
