SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 7

Reilly, Ward and Santos-Knox named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (July 31st, 2018) – Mike Reilly, Lewis Ward and Jovan Santos-Knox were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 7 of the CFL’s 2018 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

QB | MIKE REILLY | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Quarterback Mike Reilly had a huge week as Edmonton scored five touchdowns over the Montreal Alouettes in a 44-23 victory Thursday night.

Reilly threw for 415 yards, making 24 of 32 pass attempts and throwing for four touchdowns. He also ran for an additional touchdown and collected 26 rushing yards.

After putting teammate Sean Whyte into position for a field goal in the first quarter, Reilly opened the throttle in the second with a quick five-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in a 20-yard touchdown pass to Duke Williams.

The reigning Most Outstanding Player kept up the pressure on his next drive with a 17-yard touchdown toss to CJ Gable, who scrambled into the end zone to bring Edmonton into the lead. Reilly wasn’t finished with the second quarter, making a deep 61-yard pass to Duke Williams for yet another major.

Reilly solidified Edmonton’s lead in the third quarter with an 85-yard touchdown drive topped off with a 36-yard pass to Derel Walker. The quarterback went on to call his own number in the final frame with a one-yard sneak touchdown.

Reilly leads the league in passing yards with 2,063 and in touchdowns with 13. He is first among qualifying quarterbacks with a 68.7% completion percentage, going 147-for-214 in 2018.

K | LEWIS WARD | OTTAWA REDBLACKS

Kicker Lewis Ward brought the Ottawa REDBLACKS to victory on Saturday night with a 21-15 win over divisional rivals the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Ward went seven-for-seven on field goal attempts, earning all of Ottawa’s points in the contest and scoring on the opening drive of every single quarter.

The Kingston, ON native got the game off on the right foot with a successful 42-yard field goal on Ottawa’s game-opening drive.

Ward also opened the second quarter with a kick, this time scoring from 26 yards out.

The former Ottawa Gee-Gee scored twice in the third quarter, making a successful game-high 47-yard attempt. A 37-yard goal followed to give the REDBLACKS a 12-5 lead heading into the final frame.

The CFL rookie demonstrated his reliability with three more field goals, one from 35 yards, one from 15 yards and one from 35 yards, in the fourth quarter.

Ward leads the league in successful field goal attempts, going 20-for-21 in six games played in 2018 for a completion percentage of 95.2, also the highest in the league. He has now made 16 successful field goal attempts in a row and has earned 64 points for the REDBLACKS this season.

LB | JOVAN SANTOS-KNOX | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Linebacker Jovan Santos-Knox had a big game on Friday in Winnipeg’s second win in a row against the Toronto Argonauts.

Santos-Knox completed a career-high 10 defensive tackles in the 40-14 victory, including a hat trick of sacks against quarterback James Franklin.

The Waterbury, CT native laid a hit just minutes in to the game, taking Franklin down on Toronto’s opening drive with a sack for a loss of five yards.

The former UMass Minuteman took Franklin down twice in the fourth quarter, once for a loss of six yards and again for a loss of nine yards on the Argos’ unsuccessful two-point conversion with just a few minutes left in the contest.

Santos-Knox sits second overall in the CFL with 39 defensive tackles including four sacks in 2018, his second year in the CFL.
