SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS – WEEK 9

Janarion Grant, Brandon Banks and CJ Gable named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (August 13, 2019) – Janarion Grant, Brandon Banks and C.J. Gable were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 9 of the CFL’s 2019 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

REC | JANARION GRANT | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Janarion Grant had an unforgettable first CFL game in Thursday night’s first-place West Division showdown against the Calgary Stampeders.

On Grant’s second touch in the CFL, he returned a Rob Maver punt 76 yards for a touchdown to give the Bombers an early 9-0 lead. The Rutgers product found the end zone again in the second quarter, returning a Maver punt 83 yards to retake the lead, 19-14.

Grant became the first Winnipeg player to notch two punt returns for touchdowns in the same game, and only the 8th player in league history to manage the feat.

The Fort Trilby, Fla., native tallied 306 all-purpose yards in his debut, returning seven punts for 222 yards (31.7 yards per punt return) and four kickoffs for 84 yards (21 yards per kickoff return).

REC | BRANDON BANKS | HAMILTON TIGER-CATS

Brandon Banks’ last-minute touchdown completed a thrilling come-from-behind 35-34 victory over the visiting BC Lions. Banks totalled nine receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns as Hamilton emerged victorious in this year’s Hall of Fame game.

The Kansas State alum scored his first major of the day on the Tiger-Cats’ opening possession. Dane Evans capped a five-play, 67-yard drive by finding Banks for his fifth receiving touchdown of the season from 32 yards out. Hamilton elected to go for two-points and Banks caught the convert to put Hamilton ahead 8-0.

With 1:02 remaining in the game, Evans found Banks from 23 yards out for his second touchdown to tie the game 34-34, before a successful convert sealed the win.

The performance marked Banks’ third 100+ yard showing of the season and the 18th of his career.

This season, Banks leads all receivers with 51 receptions, 691 yards and a total of eight touchdowns (five receiving, two missed field goal returns and one rushing).

RB | C.J. GABLE | EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Edmonton’s C.J. Gable accumulated 150 yards from scrimmage and scored twice to lead the Eskimos over Ottawa 16-12. He rushed the ball 18 times for 116 yards (6.4 yards per carry) and added four receptions for 34 yards against the REDBLACKS.

After three first downs on Edmonton’s first possession of the game, Trevor Harris handed off the ball to Gable who busted through the middle to score from 28 yards out. The run capped an eight-play drive and gave the Esks an early 6-0 advantage.

The eight-year vet scored his second major of the game – a two-yard rush midway through the fourth quarter – to win the game for the home side.

This season, Gable has totals of 591 rushing yards (third-most in the CFL), 163 receiving yards and three majors.
