SHAW CFL TOP PERFORMERS - WEEK 1

Lawrence, Harris and Williams named Shaw CFL Top Performers

TORONTO (June 28, 2016) – Simoni Lawrence, Trevor Harris, and Chris Williams were named the Shaw CFL Top Performers of the Week for Week 1 of the CFL’s 2016 season.

The three players were chosen by a panel of judges who independently send their selections to the CFL head office. The panel includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.

 

LB | Simoni Lawrence | Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Hamilton Tiger-Cats linebacker Simoni Lawrence was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer following his impressive performance against the Toronto Argonauts in the season opener at BMO Field.

The 2015 East Division Most Outstanding Defensive Player nominee began the season where he left off last year. In his opening game, the Upper Darby, PA native notched seven tackles, two quarterback sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception that he returned 37 yards for a touchdown.

Last season the University of Minnesota product accumulated 80 tackles, five sacks and had two interceptions.

 

QB | Trevor Harris | Ottawa REDBLACKS

Ottawa REDBLACKS quarterback Trevor Harris was named a Shaw CFL Top Performer after leading the REDBLACKS to a comeback victory to spoil the Edmonton Eskimos’ home opener.

Harris entered the game seven minutes into the start of the second half in relief after Henry Burris went down with an injury.

With Ottawa down 21-14 when he entered the game, he found receiver Chris Williams for a 71-yard touchdown (a career-long) on his first pass attempt in the game.

The Edinboro product finished the game with 292 passing yards by completing 17-of-19 pass attempts and throwing three majors.

Last season with the Argonauts, Harris finished second in the Shaw CFL Top Performer points leaderboard.

 

REC | Chris Williams | Ottawa REDBLACKS

Chris Williams started his 2016 season in a stellar fashion. The Ottawa REDBLACKS receiver was an integral part of the team’s first win in Alberta on Saturday and is a Shaw Top Performer of the Week for Week 1.

Williams exploded in the third quarter with two back-to-back touchdowns from Trevor Harris. His first came seven minutes in off a 71-yard pass, and he followed it up with a 37-yard catch for a touchdown to put Ottawa ahead.

The Rio Rancho, NM native finished the game with 176 receiving yards on eight receptions.

Williams finished 2015 with 5 touchdowns and 88 receptions for 1214 receiving yards in 16 games.
